One of the biggest advantages of a Mini PC is that it can deliver the kind of computing power once associated with a desktop PC in a much smaller footprint.

That also raises a practical question. If the CPU and memory are still perfectly adequate, but the integrated graphics are starting to fall behind in gaming, 3D work, video processing or GPU-accelerated tasks, do I really need to replace the entire Mini PC?

If the system supports OCuLink, not necessarily.

With OCuLink and an eGPU dock, a desktop graphics card can be connected to a Mini PC, giving a compact system considerably more graphics and GPU-compute capability than its integrated GPU alone can provide. For users who want to keep the small form factor of a Mini PC without committing to a traditional desktop with a dedicated GPU from the outset, it can be a very attractive upgrade path.

However, OCuLink is not simply a case of plugging in one cable and forgetting about everything else. Host compatibility, the graphics card, power supply, dock and the way the system will actually be used all need to be considered in advance.

For buyers in Europe, there is another layer to think about as well: can the complete eGPU setup be bought, upgraded, returned and serviced conveniently within Europe?

Once OCuLink is involved, the real purchase is no longer just the Mini PC and the dock. It can also include a desktop GPU, power supply, power cables, the final VAT-inclusive cost and the after-sales route if something goes wrong.

In simple terms, OCuLink + eGPU makes the most sense when the CPU, memory and storage in your Mini PC are still sufficient, but GPU performance has become the main bottleneck.

What Is OCuLink?

The easiest way to think about OCuLink is this: it extends the PCIe connection normally used for a graphics card inside a PC to the outside of the chassis through a cable.

Unlike a general-purpose interface such as USB, OCuLink is designed specifically to carry PCIe data. In practical terms, it is closer to extending a graphics-card connection outside the machine.

Because desktop graphics cards are PCIe devices, OCuLink allows a Mini PC to expose PCIe connectivity externally and use an eGPU dock to install a standard desktop graphics card.

For example, the MINISFORUM DEG1 uses a PCIe 4.0 ×4 OCuLink connection, with a stated maximum link rate of up to 64 GT/s.

That 64 GT/s figure should not be interpreted as meaning that the graphics card will perform exactly as it would in a full desktop PCIe x16 environment. In practice, the DEG1 connects to the Mini PC over PCIe 4.0 ×4, while desktop graphics cards are normally installed in a full-size PCIe x16 slot. The available bandwidth and data path are therefore structurally different.

Real-world performance also depends on the GPU itself, the game or application, the resolution and how much data needs to move between the host and graphics card. The interface specification alone cannot predict the final frame rate or productivity performance.

Why Would a Mini PC Need an External GPU?

Modern high-performance Mini PCs already have enough CPU and memory performance for a wide range of office, development and content-creation workloads. Some integrated GPUs are also capable of running a good selection of games at 1080p.

The limitation is more likely to appear in workloads that depend heavily on GPU performance, such as:

  • Gaming at higher settings or higher frame rates;
  • 3D modelling and rendering;
  • GPU-accelerated video workflows;
  • Selected professional creative applications;
  • AI and compute workloads that benefit from or require a dedicated GPU.

MINISFORUM also positions eGPU docks as a way to add high-performance dedicated graphics to a Mini PC or laptop without replacing the host system.

That is where OCuLink becomes particularly useful.

If I do not need a dedicated GPU when I first buy the Mini PC, I can start with the integrated graphics and add an eGPU dock and desktop graphics card later if my workload changes. Instead of buying a complete high-performance desktop from day one, the upgrade can be made in stages.

Is an eGPU Dock the Same Thing as a Graphics Card?

This is one of the easiest points to misunderstand.

An “eGPU dock” describes an external GPU solution, but different products are built in different ways. Some eGPU products include a built-in GPU and do not require a separate desktop graphics card.

The MINISFORUM DEG1 is different. It is essentially an open graphics-card dock.

The DEG1 itself does not include a dedicated graphics card or a graphics-card power supply. You need to provide a compatible desktop GPU and an ATX or SFX PSU separately. MINISFORUM lists the DEG1 as a PCIe 4.0 ×4 OCuLink dock with ATX/SFX power-supply support.

So a complete DEG1 setup is really:

Mini PC + OCuLink + DEG1 + Desktop GPU + PSU

The cost that matters is the cost of the complete system, including the graphics card, power supply and any required cables.

What Do You Need Before Using the DEG1?

If the aim is to use the DEG1 to add a desktop graphics card to a Mini PC, there are four things I would check first.

1. Does the Mini PC actually support OCuLink?

A USB-C or USB4 port does not automatically mean that the system can use an OCuLink dock. OCuLink is a separate PCIe connection, so the host needs a compatible interface or an explicitly supported conversion method.

For example, the UM880 Plus and X1-Lite 255 currently sold through MINISFORUM EU both offer officially supported OCuLink expansion. The UM880 Plus includes USB4 alongside its OCuLink expansion option, and its product page specifically positions OCuLink for an external graphics card.

2. Which desktop graphics card will you use?

The DEG1 provides a standard desktop GPU mounting platform. MINISFORUM lists support for high-end NVIDIA and AMD desktop graphics cards, but in practice you still need to consider the card's physical dimensions, power draw, power connectors and driver support.

3. Which power supply will you use?

A desktop graphics card cannot draw all of its required power from the Mini PC through OCuLink. The DEG1 supports ATX and SFX power supplies, so the PSU should be selected according to the requirements of the chosen GPU.

If I were building this setup in Europe, I would also choose a PSU that suits local electrical standards, includes the correct mains lead and has reliable local support, rather than choosing purely on wattage or price.

4. Is there enough space and airflow?

The DEG1 is an open dock, and the graphics card still relies on its own cooler. A high-performance GPU can produce a substantial amount of heat under sustained load, so it still needs adequate airflow even if the host computer itself is a compact Mini PC.

Once the DEG1 is installed, the full setup will also occupy considerably more desk space than the Mini PC alone. The host may still be small, but the GPU, PSU and cables all need somewhere to go.

What Should European Buyers Consider When Choosing an OCuLink eGPU Dock?

VAT-inclusive pricing, where the product ships from, where a return needs to go, and whether hardware issues can be handled within Europe.

MINISFORUM EU identifies itself as an authorised MINISFORUM reseller for European customers. Its current store information states that VAT is included in displayed prices for orders shipped to EU countries and that in-stock products are dispatched from its German warehouse.

The DEG1 is also sold directly through the European store. Its current product page states that shipping is free to most European countries, with orders normally dispatched within 1–2 days and typically arriving within 3–7 business days.

That matters more than it might seem for an eGPU setup involving a host PC, dock, graphics card and power supply.

If the interface, GPU combination or physical desk setup turns out not to suit your needs, the distance and complexity of the return route can materially affect the cost and inconvenience of trying the hardware.

So if I were searching in Europe for an OCuLink eGPU dock or a Mini PC with OCuLink, I would not simply choose whichever global store showed the lowest headline price.

I would compare the complete purchase experience: host compatibility, total system cost, whether EU VAT is already included, where the order ships from, and whether returns and repairs can be handled within Europe.

OCuLink vs USB4 for an External GPU

OCuLink is closer to a dedicated external PCIe connection, while USB4 is a general-purpose high-speed interface designed to carry several types of traffic, including data and display signals.

That makes OCuLink more specialised. Its main purpose in this context is to extend PCIe connectivity.

USB4 has a different advantage: versatility. The same interface can be used for high-speed external SSDs, docks, displays and other USB-C peripherals.

If I mainly wanted one flexible high-speed port for several types of devices, I would place more value on USB4.

If I already knew that I wanted to connect a desktop GPU, I would place more value on OCuLink.

Can You Hot-Plug an OCuLink eGPU?

At least on the current MINISFORUM UM880 Plus implementation, the manufacturer explicitly states that OCuLink does not support hot-swapping and should be connected or disconnected while the PC is powered off.

A safer routine is therefore:

Shut down the PC → connect the Mini PC, OCuLink dock, GPU and power supply → check the connections → power the system on.

The same principle applies when removing the external GPU: shut the system down properly first.

OCuLink should not be treated like an ordinary USB peripheral that can be unplugged casually while the system is running. The exact requirements should always be checked against the documentation for the host device.

Does an External GPU Turn a Mini PC into a Desktop PC?

An external desktop GPU can significantly improve the graphics and GPU-compute capability of a Mini PC, but the complete system is still affected by the host CPU, PCIe connection, memory, cooling and software environment.

OCuLink eGPU setups commonly use PCIe 4.0 ×4, which is not the same connection environment as a graphics card installed internally in a full desktop PCIe slot. Performance differences therefore vary depending on the workload.

That does not make an eGPU pointless.

The value of OCuLink is not that it makes a Mini PC identical to a traditional tower. It gives the Mini PC access to desktop-class dedicated graphics while preserving the original compact host platform.

If you need a top-end GPU running at heavy load every day, regularly replace PCIe expansion cards, or want the greatest possible freedom to change internal hardware, a traditional desktop is still the more straightforward option.

If the main goal is simply to add more graphics performance to an otherwise capable Mini PC, OCuLink can make a great deal of sense.

Who Is OCuLink + eGPU Best For?

  1. Users who do not need a dedicated GPU all the time, but occasionally need much more graphics performance.

    For example, someone may spend most of the day on office work or development, then need more GPU performance for gaming, 3D work or GPU-accelerated video on certain evenings or projects.

    In that situation, there is little reason for the entire computer to be built around a large graphics card all the time.

  2. Users who already own a desktop graphics card.

    If you already have a suitable GPU, adding an open eGPU dock can cost less than building a completely new desktop PC.

    This can be especially practical in Europe, where the graphics card can be sourced separately according to local pricing and availability rather than being purchased from the same retailer as the Mini PC.

  3. Users who prefer to upgrade in stages.

    You can begin with a Mini PC that already handles everyday work on its own, then add the GPU and power supply later if graphics requirements increase. That is more flexible than paying for a dedicated GPU from the beginning when it may not yet be needed.

  4. Local AI users.

    If a model or software stack benefits from a dedicated GPU — particularly when it depends on a specific GPU software ecosystem — an OCuLink-equipped Mini PC preserves the option to add a desktop graphics card later.

    Before buying a GPU, however, it is still important to check model requirements, VRAM, software frameworks and drivers rather than assuming that any dedicated GPU will run every AI workload.

Who Probably Does Not Need an eGPU?

If your main workload is office work, web browsing, video playback or ordinary software development, a dedicated GPU may not be necessary. Modern high-performance Mini PCs already have integrated graphics capable of handling a wide range of everyday tasks.

If you only play lighter games occasionally, it is also worth checking whether the integrated GPU already meets your needs before adding another layer of hardware.

At the other extreme, if you already know that you need a large high-end GPU, sustained heavy GPU workloads, several PCIe expansion devices and frequent internal upgrades, a traditional desktop may be simpler.

The main value of an eGPU is flexibility. If that flexibility does not add anything to the way you use the system, there is little reason to buy a dock, GPU and PSU simply for the sake of “expandability”.

What Kind of Setup Is the MINISFORUM DEG1 Best Suited To?

The DEG1 is a straightforward open OCuLink graphics dock. It supports PCIe 4.0 ×4, ATX/SFX power supplies and standard desktop graphics cards. MINISFORUM currently lists a maximum link rate of up to 64 GT/s and support for high-end cards including the RTX 4090 and RX 7900 XTX.

It is better suited to users who are comfortable choosing and assembling their own hardware. You still need to select the graphics card, PSU, power cabling and a suitable amount of desk space for the size and power requirements of the GPU.

It is not an all-in-one graphics enclosure, and it does not choose the GPU or power supply for you.

That is also one of the DEG1's strengths.

If you already own a graphics card, or want the freedom to replace the GPU later, you are not locked into one fixed mobile GPU.

MINISFORUM EU currently sells the DEG1 directly to European customers. The dock can therefore be purchased through the European store, while the GPU and PSU can still be sourced separately according to local pricing and availability. Which MINISFORUM Mini PCs Offer OCuLink Expansion?

If you are shopping in Europe for a Mini PC that may need a desktop GPU later, whether the system offers officially supported OCuLink expansion is worth checking before you buy the host PC, rather than after it arrives.

Within the current MINISFORUM EU range, both the UM880 Plus and X1-Lite 255 offer OCuLink expansion.

The X1-Lite 255 product page lists a 64Gbps OCuLink port alongside USB4, HDMI 2.1 and DisplayPort 1.4. It also displays EU-focused purchasing information such as VAT-inclusive pricing, local returns and European shipping support.

The UM880 Plus likewise offers OCuLink expansion alongside USB4 and specifically positions OCuLink for connecting an external dedicated graphics card.

The AI X1 Pro-370 is another current MINISFORUM EU model with OCuLink. It is particularly relevant for users who want to rely on Radeon 890M integrated graphics initially while keeping a desktop-GPU upgrade route available for the future.

The benefit is that you do not have to buy a complete GPU setup today simply because you might need one later. You can choose the Mini PC first according to its CPU, RAM, SSD and current workload, then treat OCuLink as a future graphics-upgrade option.

OCuLink should not be the only factor in the decision. You should also consider whether the Mini PC's CPU is strong enough for your future workload, how much RAM and storage you need, and whether the complete system still makes financial sense once a dedicated GPU is added.

How Would I Decide Whether an eGPU Dock Is Worth Buying?

1. Is GPU performance actually the bottleneck?

If the CPU, memory and storage are already limiting the workload, adding a graphics card will not solve the whole problem.

2. How often will I use the dedicated GPU?

If the GPU will run at high load for long periods almost every day, a full desktop may be the better fit. If it is only needed for specific tasks, the flexibility of an eGPU becomes much more valuable.

3. Am I comfortable with the extra hardware?

The Mini PC itself remains small, but a DEG1 setup also needs a desktop graphics card, PSU and cabling. The complete system will no longer have the same footprint as the Mini PC on its own.

If those trade-offs are acceptable, OCuLink gives the Mini PC a much more flexible upgrade path than relying on integrated graphics alone.

4. Can I buy, return and repair the hardware locally in Europe?

Especially if this is my first eGPU setup, I would favour a purchase route with clear VAT-inclusive pricing, straightforward European shipping and a local return or repair path rather than a solution that might need to be shipped across continents if something goes wrong.

That will not change the GPU's benchmark score, but it can make a substantial difference to how practical the system is to own over the long term.

Would I Buy an eGPU Dock?

If my Mini PC still met my needs in every area except GPU performance, I would consider an eGPU before replacing the entire machine.

But I would not look at the dock price in isolation. I would factor in the graphics card, power supply, cables, final desk footprint and how often I would actually use the extra GPU performance. For a European purchase, I would also include the final VAT-inclusive price, where the hardware ships from, and the return and repair route in the real cost of the setup.
